Eilean Donan Castle In Beautiful Scotland

Eilean Donan Castle In Scotland

The Eilean Donan Castle in beautiful Scotland is one of the most beautiful and photographed castles in the world.

We were very excited to come across the Eileen Donan Castle on our road trip through Scotland.  Fortunately, we had a bright sunny day with hardly anyone else there.  Admission just happened to be free that day and the visitors could come and go as they pleased.  We crossed the stone bridge across the moat and walked around the castle looking into every nook and cranny for a glimpse of what may lie beyond every wall of the stone fortress.  As we peered through the medieval main entrance gate we saw a very modern laundry basket full of freshly folded laundry in the lush green courtyard.  We had a good laugh because this is not what we expected.  Everyone has to do it though.

You never know what you will come across

After we walked around the whole castle and were back in the parking lot we overheard two young twenty-something men planning the best route to get into the castle grounds without having to pay.  How could we not stay and watch the show?  The path they chose went alongside the bridge and through the moat to the other side.  Luckily for them, the tide was out, and with some effort, they were able to hop and leap over the water from rock to rock until they finally made it to the other side.  Their route took some time and planning to find just the right path without getting muddy and wet.

Therefore, this makes me stop and carefully consider when I encounter my obstacles in life. I should ask myself to first check to see if it’s a free day across the bridge.  And, could I be making it much more difficult than it is.

My parents gave me a book about Britain as a gift one Xmas when I was a little kiddo and it had a picture of Eilean Donan Castle on the cover. That’s when I fell in love with these gentle isles, even before I ever visited. Your post reminds me that I still have to visit. It surely must be one of the most amazing sights in the kingdom. Might as well visit before Scotland leaves the union…

Hi Ellie and Stefan! Scotland is inspirational for us too. Unfortunately, the castle was closed so we didn’t get to see inside. Even though it has been a highlight of our trips to the U.K., we’ll always remember how wonderful people are in Scotland. Hopefully you will have an opportunity to visit soon, and show us photos!
