Check out our new book, Secret Wisconsin
Wisconsin has unique stories that must be told. It has been a joy for us to research and share about our home state. Our hope is that Secret Wisconsin inspires you to dig deeper where you live and find new areas to explore on your next road trip. There are many things about Wisconsin that you may already know. Like how we have more lakes than our neighbors to the west, and how anglers come to Wisconsin for world-class fishing. Especially for musky, the fish of 10,000 casts. But, we tell you where to visit the world’s largest musky fish hatchery and about a unique museum nearby dedicated to canoes. Sure, we live in “America’s Dairyland,” but Wisconsin is the only place on earth, other than Switzerland, where a Master Cheesemaker certificate can be obtained. This grueling program is often referred to as a PhD in cheese. Over the years, musicians flocked to the state to perform, many in small-town venues. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, and Johnny Cash, to name a few. Because of one gruesome incident, an opening band had to change its name, then became a household name in the ’80s.
In addition to delightful cities and small towns, the entire state offers excellent outdoor experiences for making memories. Our son learned to fish and camp from his grandpa in the Northwoods. Often, he has been our guide by telling us about places off the beaten path they visited together. It seems like they left no rock unturned.
This same sense of discovery runs in our family. It can be described in this partial quote by Thomas Jefferson to Meriwether Lewis, “The object of your mission is to explore…” Whether you are a lifelong Wisconsinite or new to the state, Secret Wisconsin is for you. Use it as a tourist guide for discovering the nooks and crannies of the state. Carry on Wisconsin’s road trip culture. Go explore. Make memories.
