We took a road trip to Fred Smith’s Wisconsin Co

We took a road trip to Fred Smith’s Wisconsin Concrete Park for a felting class. Many people visit and drive by the famous folk art park created by Fred Smith, a Northwoods lumberjack turned artist, but did you know they have artistic classes held in the building to the back of the park?

Tom, definitely not the artist in the house, created this insanely beautiful felt heart. 😂 Make sure you scroll through the photos to see the back. We made sure he had a first aid kit close by, just in case. Kristi made a much nicer heart, then a stunning replica of Jim Croce.

All of us had a fun time, and many thanks to Ann from Friends of Fred Smith for hosting the workshop and local artist Garith Pipkorn for teaching the class! Be sure to visit the park when you’re in Phillips. 👍🏻

With over 300 vendors, there are plenty of craft and fall decor booths for shopping at the Stonelake Cranberry Festival. This is only a small sample of what you can find at the Festival. Stone Lake has a population of about 300 people, but on the festival weekend, approximately 30,000 to 40,000 people attend.

For us, a cranberry marsh tour at the Stone Lake C

For us, a cranberry marsh tour at the Stone Lake Cranberry Festival was a must-do event we didn’t want to miss. We went on the first tour, which started at 9 a.m. Luckily, Allison Jonjack, from a local Stone Lake family cranberry farm, was our tour leader. Allison also works with cranberry farmers throughout the state as a Cranberry Outreach Specialist for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

We went to Dave Zawistowski’s cranberry farm, part of his family’s owned Lake Nokomis Cranberries. The end of the tour offers an opportunity to purchase freshly picked berries at the gift shop. The mesh trays hold newly picked fruit on top of a base with a fan to dry the water off before packaging.

Tom was blabbing in the gift shop and didn’t realize the bus was leaving. When Dave’s mom told the 8-10 people they should go so they don’t miss the bus, they said, “That’s ok, we didn’t ride the bus.” Tom ran out to find the bus had already left, and he was stranded until the next tour came along. The driver wasn’t going back either! Imagine family trips. He was like your grandfather, but he had a schedule to keep. We’ll laugh at that for years to come.

Allison and Dave are explaining cranberries and farming. As expected, people had a lot of questions, but the most intriguing question during the tour (and Tom’s two tours) was about the gravestone on the property. Dave said, “That belongs to my grandfather, but don’t worry, no one is buried there. We just switched them out.”
