The first day of fishing season in Wisconsin is a big deal. It’s a day when people from all over the state come together to celebrate their love of the outdoors and the thrill of catching a big one or, in my case, a small one.
For Wisconsinites, the opening day of fishing season is often celebrated like a major holiday that comes around once a year. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy the beauty of the state and get out of the house after a long Wisconsin winter.
The anticipation of opening day for much of the Wisconsin population starts months in advance. They start planning their trips, updating their reels and poles, researching the newest fad lures, and getting their boats ready. They can’t wait to get out on the water and cast their lines in the hope of catching a trophy fish, thus receiving bragging rights at the local bar for weeks to come.
Opening day is also a time for moms and daughters, fathers and sons, or grandparents and grandkids to come together with one goal in mind: to catch the first fish of the season. It’s a chance to relax and enjoy the beauty of the North Woods. There’s nothing quite like sitting by a campfire, telling stories, and listening to the sounds of loons on a lake.
The first weekend in May can bring any kind of weather in Wisconsin. When I was a kid, I remember many opening weekends that ended up with our boat full of fresh snow. It didn’t matter. It was time to fish, and fishing season had arrived!

The Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Season Opener: How To Make Memories
The Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Opener is an annual event that takes place on the first Saturday of May. The event is held at a different Northwest Wisconsin location each year and is typically attended by the governor, other state officials, and media members. Everyone is invited to participate in the Family Fishing Expo and its Family Fishing Day, held on the Saturday of the event. The 2024 Governor’s Fishing opener is in Burnett County on May 3rd and 4th.
The Governor’s Fishing Opener was started In 1966 by Governor Warren Knowles. Knowles was an avid angler who knew that fishing was good for the soul as well as the economy. He believed that the annual event would be a way to promote Wisconsin’s world-class fishing and its tourism industry.
The Annual Wisconsin Governor’s Fishing Weekend has been a success since its inception. It has helped raise awareness of Wisconsin’s fishing opportunities and has generated millions of dollars in economic impact. The event has also helped to boost tourism in the host communities.
Kicking off the fishing season with the Governor is a popular occasion with Wisconsinites. It is a chance for people from all over the state to come together and celebrate their love of fishing. The celebration is also a great way to learn about Wisconsin’s angling possibilities in the state’s abundant fisheries and to compete with other anglers.
