A Fudge Revolution Begins In Wisconsin Dells

Although Wisconsin Dells holds the title of “Waterpark Capital of the World”, what visit would be complete without rich, creamy freshly made fudge?

Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge proudly proclaims they are “the Dells first fudge shop.” Although this may be true, they opened in 1962 together with Swiss Maid Fudge, and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge. Thus the fudge revolution in Wisconsin Dells began.

Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge Was The First Fudge Shop In Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells first fudge shop, Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge, continues to make fudge with the same made from scratch recipe as in 1962 when they opened. They use the finest ingredients without any preservatives to produce creamy fudge. Some of their top-quality ingredients include real Wisconsin whipping cream and butter (of course!).

Each batch is meticulously cooked European style in a copper kettle. Watch them pour a kettle boiling fudge onto the cooling table then shape it into creamy loaves using hand paddles. Their most popular flavors include turtle, chocolate walnut, and chocolate. Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge does not make vegan fudge but they do make sugar-free fudge.

When is the best time to watch fudge making at Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge? Whenever they run out of a flavor since they don’t have a set schedule.

Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge ships nationwide too.

Opening hours every day of the week are 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.

B.K. Holzen Enterprises Inc. owns Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge, Dells Fudge, and Candy Connection.

Swiss Maid Fudge and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge

743 Superior St and 216 Broadway, respectively.

Where To Easily Find Fudge In Wisconsin Dells

Swiss Maid Fudge and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge make it on the list together due to their long history.

Originally, the owners opened their shops the same year in 1962. Arnold Borcher opened his shop, Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge, first. Soon after, his friend Charlie Van Wie opened Swiss Maid Fudge down the street. They both contributed to each other’s shops with Borcher providing fudge recipes for the two.

Borcher’s daughter, Jane Heller, began working at Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge in 1968 with her dad. In 1980 she moved back to Wisconsin Dells with her husband to work in the fudge business full time.

The main reason we have combined these two is that Jane Heller bought Swiss Maid Fudge in the 1990s and combined them as one business. Even though they still kept their original names, both still use the same original recipes.

In the beginning, fudge came in basic flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and maple. Additionally, each variety came with and without nuts. This is much different from today’s 18 varieties which include chocolate bacon, snickers, and cookies and cream. Furthermore, look for seasonal flavors like cranberry walnut, rum eggnog, and white peppermint stick. Yum!

Over the years the most popular flavors continue to be turtle, chocolate, chocolate walnut, maple, maple nut, milk chocolate, and milk chocolate with nuts.

Although Swiss Maid Fudge and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge don’t offer vegan fudge they do make sugar-free fudge.

These two fudge shops are Wisconsin Dells originals along with Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge. You’ll enjoy watching fudge being made in these shops.

Tip: Check out the chocolate-dipped pickles at Swiss Maid Fudge.

The Fudgery

Wisconsin Dells Tanger Outlet

210 Gasser Road

Baraboo

If you like to be entertained while watching fudge being made then The Fudgery can do this. The Fudgery refers to making fudge as a show. They use a copper kettle to boil fudge just to the right temperature then pour it onto the cooling table. Often, they sing and whistle while forming fudge on the cooling table. They entertain like this at each of their 19 stores in 10 states.

Although they don’t have a schedule, the best chance to watch their fudge-making show would be on weekends. During the week they don’t make it as often so we recommend calling ahead of time so they can give you an idea for the day.

The Fudgery makes sugar-free fudge, however, they do not make vegan fudge.

The Fudgery opens every day at 10:00 am then closes at 8:00 pm each day except at 7:00 pm on Sunday.

Final Thoughts On Where To Easily Find Fudge In Wisconsin Dells

Where To Easily Find Fudge In Wisconsin Dells

Fudge is fun! Visiting the Dells and buying fudge go hand in hand. People enjoy fudge because they can only find it while traveling. That’s when fudge becomes a special treat since making perfect fudge at home often becomes difficult.

You can find fudge in candy stores where they make it in the back, or you can watch fudge shops make it inside their store. For this reason, making fudge becomes part of the show. Some fudge shops use copper kettles like old-world Europe while others use modern equipment. Some fudge shops use pure all-natural ingredients like real Wisconsin butter and cream, sugar, and cocoa while others use subpar ingredients. In reality, some fudge shops even use a mix.

For this reason, all fudge is not created equal. If you want the best quality fudge we recommend checking with a fudge shop first to make sure they use real cream, butter (not margarine), sugar, cocoa, and natural ingredients. If the price is the same, which would you rather have?

Visiting Wisconsin Dells wouldn’t be complete without finding soft, creamy fudge. Attractions create memories but people hold fudge closer to their hearts.

I always thought of fudge as an English prerogative. No idea they do fudge in the U.S. too. The flavours sound very interesting, especially ‘turtle’.

Turtle is the best! Besides traditional flavors like chocolate, peanut butter, and maple, Turtle is the most popular here. Rumor has it that it was invented in Baltimore from a batch of caramel that didn’t work out as planned. Thanks Stefan!
