Spreading Joy In A Gigantic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Who wants to ride shotbun?
What would you do if you saw a giant 27-foot long hot dog on wheels while you were cruising down the road? Would you stop to look or keep on going? Believe it or not, it’s normal for fans to drive for hours just to see the Wienermobile. Next to Disneyworld, this might be the second happiest attraction you can experience.
In the first place, this huge motorized heap of sausage has been intentionally bringing joy since the Great Depression.
As a matter of fact, even vegans get excited to meet the Wienermobile.
A Long History Of Creating Memories
To point out, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is excellent at creating memories. Many people remember their experience with the Wienermobile by one thing. The iconic Wienermobile whistle. You can take the wiener whistle anywhere. Put it in your pocket, or put it on a string to make a necklace. You can’t buy another at a store and you surely don’t want to lose it! It’s only about two inches long so this would be easy.
It’s funny how older and younger people talk about the whistle first. Next, their eyes light up as they joyfully share their Wienermobile experience. Their excitement is contagious and soon everyone is laughing and in a good mood. I don’t recall anyone ever having a bad experience.
These Hotdoggers Have Personality
This is the fun part, and it’s supposed to be. A Hotdogger is a person you see driving the Wienermobile and promoting Oscar Mayer hot dogs at events. Their job title is to “meat” and greet people throughout the country. Another important job for Hotdoggers is passing out sausage booty. You have to check out their humorous social media too. Pay attention to their names because they include an Oscar Mayer or picnic item.
Listen to Hotdoggers closely because we’ll guaranteed you will often hear fun-spirited sausage and picnic jabs.
Of course, they are promoting the Oscar Mayer brand. They score points in the home office with the most creative ways they earn exposure. And, yes, they do keep score for this friendly competition.
They get a lot of questions, but asking if there is a bathroom in the back of the Wienermobile is the most common. Their reply typically is “this isn’t a Weenie-bago”.
Hotdoggers applications need to be unique since over 7,000 applications are submitted each year but only twelve get the job. Each Wienermobile is assigned two people to carry out its duties. The job is a one-year internship for recent college graduates. Oscar Mayer prefers their B.S or B.A. degree to be in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or advertising.

Our Experience
Since one of Oscar Mayer’s main plants has been in Madison, Wisconsin, the Wienermobiles have been stationed here. Sadly, the plant recently closed, but they still call Madison home.
We both call Madison home, even though I came along later. Kristi is from Madison and has a lifetime of memories from Wienermobiles. Nevertheless, we see them driving around town and we still get excited each time.
This is important. Often, we see the Planters Nutmobile cruising along with the Wienermobile on their way to an event. So, if you see one then look for the other because there might be a chance they are traveling together.
Wienermobile Fun Facts
The Wienermobile was created in 1936 during the Great Depression to bring surprise and joy to people in Chicago. At this time, Chicago was the headquarters of Oscar Mayer.
In 1951 Oscar Mayer developed wiener whistles and each pack of hot dogs included one. But, you can only get a new wiener whistle from a Hotdogger, and it’s been this way for several decades.
Currently, there are six marketing zones in the United States. Each zone has one Wienermobile with two Hotdoggers assigned to it.
Don’t miss them! Get the event schedule here.
There are around 300 Hotdogger Alumni.
The Wienermobile horn plays the famous Oscar Mayer wiener jingle in 21 musical varieties including rap, cajun, and a Brazilian Bossa Nova.
Dimensions of a Wienermobile are 27 feet long, 11 feet tall, and 8 feet wide.
In 1936 Oscar Mayer created the first Wienermobile.
A 1952 Wienermobile is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Final Thoughts
Oscar Mayer has been connecting people with their products for decades by having fun. It’s all about making people smile. Even though they have been around since 1883, people still get excited like a kid when they see a Wienermobile.
